Resveratrol is a naturally derived polyphenol antioxidant, which is found naturally in over 70 plant species. It can also be found on skins of red grapes, nuts, pine trees, and blueberries. Plants produce it for protection against UltraViolet radiation and extreme temperature changes. It’s a potent antioxidant, and cardioprotective properties have been well documented

Oxidative stress is the disbalance between the free radicals and antioxidants levels in the body. The imbalance causes free radicals to react with other molecules of the body resulting in chemical reactions. These reactions are sometimes beneficial and sometimes harmful. Antioxidants stabilize the free radicals, making them less reactive. 

However, oxidative stress generated by physical activities is good for your health as it produces antioxidants and helps in tissue growth. 

Is resveratrol good for your heart?

Resveratrol has anti-inflammatory properties that help in reducing inflammation of the body. It lowers the bad cholesterol, i.e., LDL levels on the body, which prevents blood clots and plaque buildup on artery walls, preventing the risk of a heart attack.

It is a type of blood pressure that affects the artery walls of the heart. However, as per the studies, resveratrol produces nitric oxide that relaxes the blood vessels, which results in the lowering of the systolic blood pressure. Resveratrol also has antioxidant properties, which play a significant role in lowering blood pressure. 

The proper dosage for blood pressure related issues has not yet been finalized. Experts need more research to confirm it.

Reduction of bad cholesterol

In our body, the excess amount of LDL cholesterol or harmful cholesterol levels leads to plaque buildup in artery walls. The antioxidant properties of resveratrol help in increased production of HDL cholesterol or good cholesterol levels and reduce the harmful cholesterol levels. This helps in reducing the possibility of artery blockages that lead to heart attacks

Apart from the several benefits, one must keep in mind that this supplement lacks thorough research, and the above discussion is the result of the studies conducted to check specific conditions in limited dosage. To use them in full-scale FDA(Food and drugs administration) regulation is required, which has not been done to date, and also its accurate dosage is still not confirmed. So to use them, you should wait for the FDA regulation and the research results or consume them mildly after the consultation of your doctor.

Oxidative stress triggers inflammation in the body in response to which the immune system produces free radicals to fight it. This cycle continues leading to a high degree of oxidative stress leading to several cardiovascular conditions.

Increased oxidative stress leads to the narrowing of the arteries and damages the endothelium tissues of the heart. The endothelium is a protective layer between the bloodstream and the different organs of the body. Damage to these tissues leads to various cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, heart failure, coronary artery disease, etc. Narrowing down of the arteries leads to high blood pressure as the heart pumps blood to the oxygen-deprived cells more elevated than the regular rate.

Atherosclerosis

Endothelium cell damage also leads to atherosclerosis. The damage leads to clogged or narrowing down of the arteries. It is due to bad cholesterol accumulation on the artery wall. The white blood cells that are sent to clean up this cholesterol sometimes gets stuck in there. Such a process repeats over the period, which thickens the artery openings. Clogged arteries disrupt the flow of blood throughout the body, resulting in blood clots. Blood clots lead to heart failure or heart stroke. 

Control measures for oxidative stress

The clear answer to getting rid of oxidative stress conditions is maintaining the balance of free radicals and antioxidants in the body. To suppress the excessive free radicals, one must eat antioxidants rich foods. Some fruits and vegetables that are rich in antioxidants are berries, cherries, citrus fruits, prunes, dark leafy greens, broccoli, carrots, tomatoes, olives, vitamin E rich foods, vitamin C rich foods, turmeric, green tea, melatonin, onion, garlic, cinnamon, etc. 

Apart from foods, one must also impart specific lifestyle changes such as: 

  • Regular exercise
  • Quit smoking
  • Avoid chemical exposure(cleaning chemicals, pesticides)
  • Avoid excessive UV exposure
  • Avoid alcohol consumption
  • Have a good sleep regularly
  • Avoid excessive intake of foods

Oxidative stress is a severe issue as it is hard to detect. The free radical damage to your body takes a long time in developing severe complications. So, you should start from today itself the measures to prevent heart diseases as most of the damages caused by them are almost irreversible and may cause loss of your life.
