International Day of Yoga, or usually and unofficially referred to as Yoga Day, is celebrated yearly on 21 June after its beginning in 2015. An international day for yoga was declared universally by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Yoga is a physical, mental, and religious practice founded in India. The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his UN address advised the date of 21 June, as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and shares a special significance in many parts of the world. History of International Yoga Day

Yoga itself is a physical, mental, and spiritual practice that started in India about 6,000 years before. During the ages, yoga emerged and developed, along the way, becoming a philosophy in itself. Later, in the 19th century, yoga came to the notice of the West, which had begun to take a general interest in Eastern culture and view. Soon after, Swami Vivekananda, the greatest Hindu teacher to actively advocate and demonstrate yoga to a western public, traveled Europe and the United States.

The United Nations General Assembly announced the International Yoga Day official on December 11th, 2014. The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, had this to say about the determination to create this day:

“Yoga is a precious gift of India’s ancient tradition. It embodies the unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and satisfaction; harmony among man and nature; a holistic path to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to create a sense of unity with yourself, the world, and nature. By replacing our lifestyle and creating awareness, it can help us deal with mood change. Let us work towards choosing an International Yoga Day.” The date chosen on which to celebrate International Yoga Day, June 21st, is also of great significance, as it is Summer Solstice and marks the transition to Dakshinayana. So far, more than 170 countries worldwide have shown their support for this day.
