Erectile Dysfunction Meaning, also more commonly termed impotence, is the inability to achieve or sustain a penile erection. This basic definition does not fully explain the degree and variations that can occur within the condition.

Spongy tissues line this cylinder. The spongy tissue is made up of smooth muscle fibers, blood vessels (veins and arteries), and bodily fluids.
Under normal circumstances, stimulation causes several times the resting amount of blood to flow into the penis. The blood moves to fill the space and enlarge the surrounding muscles. This resulting fluid pressure causes the penis to lengthen and stiffen, and the result is an erection
As these relatively simple systems, in turn, rely on an enormously complex set of nerves, hormones, circulatory, and other body functions, there are a considerable amount of things that can go wrong- resulting in erectile dysfunction and a limp penis. Blood pressure changes, the inability of nerves to send these signals properly, failed muscle stimulation, and various other scenarios are possible.
Of equal importance are the physical requirements the male body needs to create an erection. Stimulation is very important- particularly in the areas surrounding the penis. Mental stimulation has also proven to be an important factor in sustaining an erection. When there is no obvious physical stimulation, mental imagery, and imagination can assist in maintaining an erection.
In erectile dysfunction, it obviously can become very hard to measure these factors- as it is such a personal condition. Depression, anxiety, self-deception, and other issues can all contribute to a failure of erection for extended periods of time.
